Winter Pride is a collaboration between a number of LGBTQQIP2SAA community organizations and University of Guelph organizations and clubs to create a space where the many communities of Guelph can come together and celebrate our creativity, our resiliency, and the many kinds of love we share and experience. We plan this festival in February in recognition of the Toronto Bathhouse Raids and how they sparked visibility and activism in our communities in a way that is often compared to the "riot" at Stonewall Inn that many of us remember in June of each year.
This year the committee has been hard at work putting together events with extensive help from our community partners. We have over 10 days of events with special attention to making as many of them sober spaces, in areas that accommodate mobility devices.

Bedtime Stories for Every Body
6:00pm | Online via YouTube
A series of diverse story books being shared by our wonderful volunteers. Available in ASL as well as spoken format.
"from the stars in the sky to the fish in the sea" - written by Kai Cheng Thom, illustrated by Kai Yun Ching & Wai-Yant Li
Description:
A magical gender variant child brings transformation and change to the world around them thanks to their mother's enduring love.
In this captivating, beautifully imagined picture book about gender, identity, and the acceptance of the differences between us, Miu Lan faces many questions about who they are and who they may be. But one thing's for sure: no matter who this child becomes, their mother will love them just the same.
"Grandma Calls Me Beautiful" - written by Barbara M. Joosse, illustrated by Barbara Lavallee
Description:
A companion to the best-selling Mama, Do You Love Me? and Papa, Do You Love Me?, this beautiful book captures the unique bond that exists between grandmother and grandchild. Set in Hawaii, the vibrant watercolor illustrations and lyrical text combine to capture the lush landscapes and unique traditions of Hawaiian culture, while at the same time conveying a universal message. Sure to be another instant classic.
"Ganesha is Gorgeous" - written by Neil Panchmatia, illustrated by Whimsical Designs by C J
Description:
Ganesha has felt like an outsider throughout their life. Bullied at school for being fat, they don’t like how they look or who they are. Meeting a dazzling new friend who is fully and unapologetically himself changes his life!
In this empowering and affirming tale, Ganesha learns that being different, while often difficult, is not something to change or correct. In a world that encourages and enforces fitting in versus standing out, there is an inherent freedom in brave and authentic self-expression. Difference, Ganesha realizes, is actually a superpower! Whether this difference is of body size, gender identity/expression, disability, skin color, or any other form of human diversity, it is to be cherished and celebrated. Ganesha experiences the transformative power of self-acceptance as they learn that they matter, belong, and are truly gorgeous - exactly as they already are!
"Lovely" - written & illustrated by Jess Hong
Description:
Big, small, curly, straight, loud, quiet, smooth, wrinkly. Lovely explores a world of differences that all add up to the same thing: we are all lovely!
"My Rainbow" - written by Trinity and DeShanna Neal, illustrated by Art Twink
Description:
A dedicated mom puts love into action as she creates the perfect rainbow-colored wig for her transgender daughter, based on the real-life experience of mother-daughter advocate duo Trinity and DeShanna Neal.
Warm morning sunlight and love fill the Neal home. And on one quiet day, playtime leads to an important realization: Trinity wants long hair like her dolls. She needs it to express who she truly is.
So her family decides to take a trip to the beauty supply store, but none of the wigs is the perfect fit. Determined, Mom leaves with bundles of hair in hand, ready to craft a wig as colorful and vibrant as her daughter is.

Families in Transition: Community Discussion and Support Night
7:00pm - 9:00pm | Online via Zoom
A community discussion night supporting parents, care-givers, and guardians of transgender and gender creative children and youth.
Families in Transition was created by Central Toronto Youth Services, an accredited children’s mental health center in Toronto, to help parents and caregivers get the information and support they need. Originally a single resource, it has been expanded to a full 8-week program. ARCH will be offering this program to interested parents and caregivers in our communities, however we wanted to open up a discussion with parents about what your needs are in this time. With many competing factors and stressors, we want to meet parents where they are with what they have, and support them to provide the best guidance, care, and love to their trans and gender diverse children.
Our goal is to help you maintain a close, healthy relationship with your child, regardless of what path their gender development takes – because both science and common sense tell us that the most important factor in a young person’s mental health is their relationship with their family.
This session, and accompanying program, provides a group to explore these issues with, as well as additional reading, resources, and exercises to do independently and together. ARCH is happy to provide support and resources to interested parents who are unable to participate in the group as many of these activities can also be done alone, however we have found that the support of a facilitator who is a mental health professional can be helpful.
This community discussion night will be hosted by the facilitators who will be running the Families in Transition 8-week program. You'll have an opportunity to connect with other parents, discuss common questions and struggles, and access guidance, resources, and support for the journey that you and your family is embarking on, no matter the destination.

Queer Bodies Panel
3:00pm EST | Online via Zoom
How do you feel in your body? How do your experiences, society, and worldviews play a role in your relationship with your body? These in-depth questions are never-ending and are always important to talk about. Elements such as race, sexuality, religion, and gender all play large roles when it comes to the way we feel in our own skin. Social and emotional topics within the queer community are important discussions; however, the physical aspects of being queer are equally as important.
Join us for our panel of diverse-bodied QTPOC as they discuss what it means to have a “Queer” body!

- Starkey Hill Conservation Area is unfortunately not accessible by public transit. We will be meeting at the trailhead beside the main parking lot. There is ample parking in the parking lot closest to our meeting point and minimal distance to walk from vehicles to our meeting place.
- Due to COVID-19, we unfortunately must discourage individuals from car-pooling with people not in their 'bubble'.
- The trails at Starkey Hill may be quite slippery and covered in ice during this time of year. We do recommend participants bring ice cleats or 'crampons' to minimize the risk of slipping/falling. These are great to have in the winter to reduce your risk anytime you're out and about and can significantly reduce strain injuries while on icy terrain.
- The trail loop is 3.5km in length, however the group may decide to turn back/not do the entire route. However, participants should be prepared for that length or else to turn around on their own. Additionally, the trail has an elevation gain of 108m, so participants should be prepared for this level of exertion. The trails are otherwise wide and well-manicured, though there are points of significant erosion and some steep inclines.
- Please keep an eye on the weather. Depending on the weather patterns preceding the event, the trails may be wet or slippery and more difficult for some attendees. In the case of extreme or inhospitable weather, the hike may be cancelled or postponed with participants being notified via email.
- We cannot provide childcare for this event, however children are welcome to attend and participate! Children must also be register as an attendee to ensure everyone's safety and to limit exposure. We ask that they are dressed appropriately for the weather and that all participants contribute to making the space fun and accessible for individuals of all ages and abilities.
- We ask that all participants help to make this an accessible event by not wearing scents/perfumes and refraining from consuming drugs or alcohol during the hike or before the hike.
- There are unfortunately no bathrooms available at this location.
- All attendees must arrive wearing a snug-fitting mask; ideally an n95 or kn95, however two clothe masks may be worn together if you do not have an n95 or kn95. If you do not bring a mask one will be provided for you.
- All attendees must remain masked for the duration of the hike. Previously we asked that individuals remain masked whenever social distancing of at least 6" is not possible, however due to the highly contagious nature of the Omicron variant, we ask that individuals remain masked regardless of distance.
- If an interested participant is unable to wear a mask for medical reasons but believes that strenuous activities in the winter are within their capacity, they are encouraged to reach out to the coordinator to explore options for participating. Our priority is maintaining the safety of everyone involved and ensuring individuals are masked is part of our harm reduction policy.
- We encourage all participants to be fully vaccinated and to receive their booster shot as soon as they become eligible to further reduce the risk to themselves and others in our communities.
- All hike participants will adhere to the lowest tolerance boundaries of other attendees regarding mask-wearing and distance kept, including those who have received both COVID vaccinations and/or boosters. That means, if someone in your group is not comfortable with being closer than 6', individuals must respect this boundary and act accordingly. This is to respect the needs and concerns of everyone involved, to maintain our commitment to our community's safety, and to prioritize the well-being of all, especially those living with compromised immune systems or other conditions which may put them at elevated risks. This is also just good community consent! :)
- ***Participants are encouraged to dress appropriate for the weather, wear warm layers, bring your crampons/ice cleats/hiking poles, and bring a bottle of water!

We will be auctioning off baskets of amazing goods from a variety of local Guelph Pride supporters! The auction itself will be held on social media with a grand finale for bidding at our Comedy Night - the auction will end at the end of the show and all results will be announced the following day.
We're currently seeking donations from local businesses, organizations, and artists who would like to help support Guelph Pride! If you're interested or would like more information, please send an email to co-chair@guelphpride.com
